Are you a thermometer or a thermostat?

Updated: Jan 26, 2021

Isn’t it amazing how a little sunshine can lift your spirits? 🌞

I enjoyed some time in a park today, it felt great to be recharged by the sunshine while I grounded myself with Mother Earth. Plenty of folks passed by - but I noticed a general disconnect. I do understand we‘re practicing social distancing, but that doesn’t mean we need to be scared to look at one another!

I want to share one distinct interaction I had. I met a kind elderly couple and we started having a nice conversation. My mother always says her favorite conversations are with elders, as they have the most fascinating stories (Mama knows best!) We shared stories of our past and just enjoyed each other’s company - but what will stick with me was the ending of our conversation. Out of general habit I said “have a great day”, but the man corrected me.

He said, “There are two types of people in the world - thermometers and thermostats. Thermometers adapt to the environment around them. Thermostats CHANGE the environment around them.

Be a thermostat.

If we change our way of thinking - of speaking - we will BE the change. So instead of saying “have a great day”, try “MAKE it a great day” I will never forget this conversation, and I hope you find inspiration in it.

Now go on and MAKE today a great day! 🌞
